Why Are You So Kind

Reverend Denise Burns Personal Stories

I have the awesome privilege of walking my granddaughter to school each morning. She gets dropped off pretty early and spends some time playing with our dogs and cats and reading, and watching how-to-paint videos on my tablet. Sometimes dancing with me in the kitchen to Taylor Swift. You know, fun second grade stuff. We are making memories, as my mother likes to say 🙂

When it’s time to leave for school, we put the leashes on the dogs, make sure all her important things are in her backpack, put the poop bags in my pocket, and we head out.

One morning as we were walking she asked me, “Cecie, why are you so kind?” At first I was not sure I had heard her correctly, so I asked her what she said, and she repeated it. (My first thought was, boy, her mother would never ask me that!) I thought for a second, and then I told her that God loves me so much I want to share that love with the people around me, and then we had a good time of thinking about the ways that God is so good to us.

I am so humbled that I have the opportunity to spend quality time with someone I love, and even more humbled that she can catch a glimpse of the God-blessing in my life. My prayer is always that God helps me to live like I talk.

But the fruit of the spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. Against such things there is no law (Galatians 5:22).
