Love is Not a Feeling

In America, Mother’s Day is a day when we pay tribute to our mothers and/or experience mixed feelings of love, regret, memories, anger, bitterness, loss . . . It is not just a happy day when we send flowers or give a gift. I think that was the original intent—to honor those women who invested themselves in our lives, and absolutely we want to do that! Here’s to all those women: mothers, aunts, grandmothers, daughters, neighbors, sisters, friends, cousins who have brought us joy, given us hope, listened to us, walked alongside us throughout our journeys.

Family is God’s original gift to us as God’s children, and whatever the shape our family takes in this richly diverse world, we are grateful for it. Look around you—you are looking at family. Let us not restrict our thankfulness and gratitude so narrowly that we only choose to honor a select few. I have known people who will only extend grace to the people who “share their own blood.” What blessings they missed out on.

Last week we thought about how, as branches on the True Vine, we share our family heritage with each and every one who calls on Jesus as their Brother and God as their Father. Hallelujah! Thank you God, for good fathers and mothers all around us!
