God Is Asking

Bible Passage: Mark 10:46-52

If you have spent any time at all in a car in our valley, you have seen people on street corners asking for money. Is there ever any doubt what they want? I frequently wonder what they actually need, but they plainly print on the signs they are holding up what they want.

Bartimaeus is well known in our community. We see him (or her!) on almost every freeway on or off ramp, and if you’re like me, you seldom make eye contact. Bartimaeus is only visible from our peripheral vision. It is easier to ignore them than it is to acknowledge their neediness, and so Bartimaeus becomes an invisible part of our society. Rejected. Hopeless.

How far down can hopelessness dump you? How long can you go before you just can’t anymore?

This is not a problem just for those of us who live in this metropolitan area, is it? It is a problem so common all over the world. And it was a problem 2,000 years ago in Jericho. Loss of income. Loss of health. Loss of hope.

But we know the Giver of Hope.
