Proof of Heaven: A Neurosurgeon’s Journey into the Afterlife, by Even Alexander, M.D.
I think that most of us are curious about that one thing that none of us can know until we die, and that is what comes after? I am a skeptical reader –I do not believe everything I read just because it is in print, but I am also a curious reader, so I picked up this book at a local bookstore to check it out, and checked it out at the register.
As a #1 New York Times bestseller, I am obviously not alone in my curiosity. Dr. Alexander was a highly trained neurosurgeon who experienced a rare illness that attacked his brain. The part of the brain that controls thought and emotion—and in essence makes us human—shut down completely. For seven days he lay in a coma. Then, as his doctors considered stopping treatment, Alexander’s eyes popped open. He was back.
Before his illness and recovery, Dr. Alexander could not reconcile his scientific knowledge with any belief in heaven, God, or the soul. Today, he is a doctor who believes that true health is possible only when we realize that God and the soul are real and that death is not the end of personal existence but only a transition.
This book is a fascinating combination of the medical facts surrounding Alexander’s illness and treatment and his memories while he was in a coma—I read it in one afternoon. After reading a book like this, I think that the appropriate response would not be, “Is it true?” but “There is so much to God that we cannot know!”
